More on Urban Agriculture

Tightening budgets across the nation are forcing many folks to think deeply about the cost of transporting food from where it is produced to market shelves. And, appropriately, Urban Agriculture is an increasingly hot topic in the Baltimore Washington metro area. If you found the Farms in Baltimore post to be interesting, you might want to check out the very informative Urban Agriculture panel discussion on the National Building Museum website. Be sure to have some time on your hands though; the discussion is roughly an hour and a half long.

Baltimore, Poe, Book Thing

From the days of Edgar Allan Poe to the present, Baltimore has had a strong literary tradition.

And, in celebration of this tradition, wonderful institutions such as the Enoch Pratt Free Library and the annual

Baltimore Book Festival are going strong. In addition, The Book Thing, Inc. collects books from the public and redistributes them without charge.

Farms in Baltimore

A recent Urbanite Magazine article entitled "Baltimore Observed: Sustainable City" discussed an innovative plan to establish urban farms which will eventually provide 10% of the food consumed in the city. Additional information can be found at the Real Food Farm website.

Buy City Owned Properties in Baltimore

If you are a person with money in your pocket who sees nothing but opportunity in those Baltimore City neighborhoods which are full of abandoned and underutilized properties, you might want to familiarize yourself with SCOPE (Selling City Owned Properties Efficiently). This program provides a simple and cost effective means for the city to sell properties to investors and adventurous homeowners.

As one might expect, these properties are inexpensive for a reason. For example, most need A LOT of work. For your convenience, Baltimore City provides repair estimates.

So, you want to see a current list of SCOPE properties? BaltimoreHousing.org/ScopeProperties

Your financing is in place and you need more detailed information about SCOPE?  GBBR.org/ScopeProperties

Buy Local Baltimore

The Chesapeake Sustainable Business Alliance's Buy Local Baltimore campaign promotes the support of independently owned businesses throughout the Baltimore area.

For example, in Northeast Baltimore,  you might be tempted to choose from a large selection of exotic coffees at Zeke's Coffee and have it ground while you wait. Or, you might be interested in one of the weekly specials at Koco's Pub such as Thursday's Crab Cake Platter.

In North Baltimore, the freshly prepared breads, soups, and pastries at Atwaters are delicious. And, going to see a movie at the nearby Senator Theater with its original Art Deco decor and Mid Century modern seating is always entertaining.
